Why buy Japanese used cars in the first place?
For most of the Filipinos and other practical consumers out there in the whole wide world, Japanese used cars are considered the best maintained cars in the market and carry transparent standardized records that are reflected in their competitive prices on top of everything else added to the basic purchase cost (shipping fees, conversion costs plus customs/clearance fees and taxes to import them in the country).
The reasons for these are quite simple and can be summarized below:
- Japan conducts the highest standards of safety and maintenance inspection routines every 2 years in the form of “shaken” which means, all vehicles have to strictly pass the standards set for them by a government before they are allowed to run on the streets and be considered road-worthy. This routine inspection and maintenance costs more or less $1500 and above just to have the car available for use. This makes possessing a car in Japan, a very noble luxury or choice. Add to that, other costs such as parking spaces which could easily run up top $100 depending on the location.
- The Japanese consumer mentality is that, once a car reaches the 3-5 year period, owners feel that buying a new car on another new loan or lease is much more practical. There a wide variety of consumer “discounts” for buying new cars all the time which include the tax discounts and heavy promotions by both the government and the car makers to promote sales of the newer models. This means that must dispose of their cars easily and fast which is then reflected on the low resale prices of the cars in the local market. There is a strict policy here that for one parking space, only one car can be registered and in order to register a car in your name, you will be required to present an empty parking space with a valid contract in order to complete the process, so for people wanting a new car badly, disposing cars as fast as possible tends to favor the resellers or those who buy them for resale.
- The Japanese population is shrinking and add the fact that most of the urban population opt to take advantage of the easier, cheaper and more convenient mass transportation system in place. In effect, lesser people are actually wanting cars, second-hand/old or new.
- With the combined effects of the above, you could only expect that the quality and price of Japanese used cars outweigh the image and appeal of the locally traded cars in the Philippines where cars are considered an asset which does not significantly depreciate in value over the years whereas compared in Japan, a car are treated as a liability considering the overall possession and maintenance costs needed to have one.

Why buy Import Cars (Non-Japanese Brand Cars) from Japan?
By saying “Japanese used cars”, the notion also includes foreign branded cars which were originally
sold for and “used” in Japan domestically. Honestly speaking, Japan offers the cheapest import cars
prices worldwide for the reasons stated below yet independent of those given above.
- Only the above-average or richer class people in Japan really opt to buy Mercedes Benz,
BMW, Audi, or Chevrolet and etc for that matter because the “normal” family or even the
normal Japanese consumer mentality always tend to lean towards the lesser overall
maintenance costs as one of the main factors being considered when one is buying a car.
Since the import cars are already expensive as it is to own and as time goes by, the
maintenance costs goes up as well exponentially, so in the end of the logic, they tend not
become popular choices for anyone buying them in the 2nd hand market.
The second degree or generation market for these “brand-new-bought” cars when resold
only exists because the owners does not care much how high or low they resell their cars
since they are already “rich” in the first place, and also the fact, that the 2nd hand consumers
will not pay top yen for something they think would really cost high in further maintaining,
and considering other unknown “blind” costs that may be incurred in owning them.
- This means, that for societies like the Philippines, which puts more importance in the name
or brand of the car being driven by one, buying import cars from Japan is a real bargain.
Especially for any collector, just to have a specific model of a car added in his or her
collection, it would not be so much costly to own one or two import cars, if you could find
the perfect deal in the Japanese used cars market for them.
- On top of the reasons that maybe available as to why buy import cars from Japan, the best
would be that: they do not need to be converted to left hand to cater to the law in the
Philippines which only allow left-hand cars to be driven on the road. There are a lot of
originally left-hand import cars in Japan because both left and right-hand cars are allowed
here which justifies their presence in the market.
- In addition particularly to #3 above, there is a “thing” with the rich Japanese people who
buy left-hand import cars, it is more or less a thing to flaunt or considered a status among
them which is not patronized majorly by the consumers in the 2nd hand resale market for
such left-hand import cars which leaves them unpopular and cheap in the used-car market.
Most richer old and CEO-type guys, still prefer owning right-hand import cars so, the mania
about owning and riding a left-hand import car is actually limited to a few people who
actually don't really have the capacity to match the statuses of the cars they are pimping on
with. Eventually, rich people who does not care too much about the resale value of their cars
since they have overflowing money in the first place, ends up contributing to the highly
saturated second-hand market for them. Thus, the need of Japan to export these cars
somewhere where they will be still valued so much compared to them being just considered
mostly as “junk” pieces of scrap metal in a first-world country like Japan. What a waste
indeed! Mottainai!
So thinking and judging us that we are well-aware of these “psyche” of the Japanese consumers in
